Title: Virtual Process Modeling for Metallic Additive Manufacturing based on Directed Energy Deposition
Abstract: The ability to fabricate complex structures has rapidly evolved, with additive manufacturing (AM), specifically 3D printing, emerging as a versatile and transformative process. Traditionally used 3D printing technology for plastics, which may satisfy minor applications in the industrial context, is no longer sufficient for critical industry demands. New advanced manufacturing methods for high-performance materials are emerging exponentially and metallic AM has become one of the most promising technologies for next-generation materials used in the aerospace, automobile, maritime, wind turbine industries, etc. Metallic AM involves complex heat transfer and thermomechanical behaviors of the printed metals, resulting in AM-induced defects, residual stress, residual deformation, etc. The proposed research aims to address these limitations by advancing metallic AM techniques. Specifically, we will leverage finite element analysis (FEA) for virtual process modeling of the Directed Energy Deposition (DED) technology. This research will primarily focus on heat transfer via conduction, convection, and stress analysis. Specifically, it will explore strategies to mitigate high stresses during printing caused by the conduction and convection.
