Title: Developing a Collegiate Solar Car Racing Team at UTA
Abstract: This research project aims to evaluate the feasibility of launching a student group at UTA to compete in the American Solar Car Challenge, which fits well with the theme of Building Energy Sustainability for the Future. The study will examine the steps necessary to design and build a solar-powered vehicle as the first component of establishing a student team to compete in the Challenge. Students will measure power and energy flows of the REE electric scooter when it is charged using solar power to provide preliminary hands-on experience with taking and analyzing data. They will then perform modeling of the system to provide theoretical comparisons for their measurements. A Solar Car Racing Team will also require sponsors and means of securing necessary funding, as well as physical space to design, build and test the car. Students will interview existing university teams to assist with identifying opportunities and preparing for challenges as experienced by other teams. Additionally, this research team will be integrated with current research being done in the REE program related to solar energy and sustainability. The ultimate goal is to gather the information needed to initiate the group.
