Title: Medtronic UR Automated Bone Scanning and Cutting Project
Abstract: Our Senior Design team (Meditech Robotics) is collaborating with Medtronic, an established medical technology company focused on manufacturing tools and integrating robotics for advanced implementations aiding surgical operations, to provide an enhanced solution for accurate bone cutting. Medtronic has requested Meditech Robotics to improve its Universal Robot (UR) Arm to allow for automated bone cutting. The collaboration involves developing end-effectors that can be used to attach a variety of cutting tools and a surface scanner to the UR. The surface scanner will enable real-time surface mapping of bones, allowing for more accurate and precise cutting based off a definitive and stable reference site. From this scan, a compatible user interface will be devised to provide exact control of the robot's cutting operations. Meditech Robotics will produce a dedicated station that can firmly hold various bones and objects, currently focused on a scapula, enabling extensive testing for data collection and validation of the cutting tool, and scanner functionality. Prototypes will be developed and tested to improve performance, following validation of functionality. This solution intends to augment Medtronic's surgical technology capabilities by increasing the precision and efficiency of automated bone cutting.
