| Title: | Development of novel gaseous injectors for rotating detonation engines – design of a schlieren system |
| Abstract: | A schlieren visualization system was developed for the purpose of investigating fluid flow through gaseous injectors meant for use in a rotating detonation engine. For simplicity, the flow field studied with the schlieren system was one produced in a shock tube. The shock tube, which has a 1-inch square cross section throughout its length, consists of a driver section and a driven section which is connected to a test section that has a 3-in diameter optical window. The flow field was illuminated by a Z-type schlieren system. A point source of light was produced using an LED and a condenser lens. The light was then collimated using a paraboloidal mirror and directed through the optical port of the shock tube, before being focused using another paraboloidal mirror. At the focal point a knife edge was placed in order to control the sensitivity of the schlieren images. High speed video recording of the experiment was performed using a Shimadzu HPV-X2 camera. A unified LabVIEW program was developed to monitor the shock tube operation and synchronously trigger the high speed camera to record the desired flow field. The high speed schlieren images were processed to determine the shockwave velocity and flow characteristics. |
