| Title: | 3D Simulation Model to Predict Intraocular Lens-Mediated Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) |
| Abstract: | Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is a standard treatment for cataracts. A common side effect is posterior capsule opacification (PCO), the re-clouding of vision due to lens epithelial cell growth between the IOL and the lens capsule. Based on the “No Space, No Cells, No PCO” hypothesis, a strong IOL-lens capsule interaction is believed to reduce PCO formation and incidence. To test this, we developed a 3D simulation model in SolidWorks, comprising a simulated human lens capsule and IOL. We designed different human lens capsules to represent their unique shapes and sizes in patients of varying ages. We investigated how lens capsule dimensions affect their interaction with IOLs. Our simulations show that pediatric lens capsules (curved and spherical) have significantly less physical contact with IOLs than adult capsules (flat and aspherical). These results are consistent with clinical findings that pediatric patients have a higher tendency to develop PCO following IOL implantation than adult patients. This model can aid in designing improved IOLs for pediatric patients, with the potential for significantly reduced PCO. |
