Title: Enhancing Density Properties in High-Temperature Refractory Materials through Additive Manufacturing Techniques
Abstract: This project focuses on fine-tuning the additive manufacturing (AM) process to produce high-density, high-temperature refractory materials straight out of the printer, without the need for time-consuming and costly post-processing. Refractory materials, which are critical in industries like aerospace and energy, need to withstand extreme conditions, but achieving the necessary density usually requires extra steps after manufacturing. Our goal is to optimize key process parameters – like laser power, scan speed, and powder layer thickness – to ensure that the materials come out dense and ready for use right from the start. By experimenting with different settings and using advanced statistical techniques, we aim to find the best combinations that consistently result in strong, high-quality parts. This work will be done in the Innovative Additive Manufacturing (IAM) Lab at The University of Texas at Arlington, where students will get hands-on experience with the latest in manufacturing technology. The end result will be a set of guidelines for producing dense refractory materials more efficiently, which could have significant benefits for industries that rely on these materials.
