Title: Trigger Generator
Abstract: Pulsed power systems commonly utilize high-voltage switches known as spark gaps, activated by a high-voltage pulse from a specialized device called a trigger generator. This generator supplies the required pulse amplitude and shape to initiate an electrical breakdown across the spark gap, ensuring reliable switch activation. A key function of the trigger generator in these systems is to provide consistent activation across various spark gap designs, each with unique breakdown characteristics. Additionally, as these systems operate with high-voltage equipment, the trigger generator must be battery-operated with galvanic isolation on the input signal to ensure safety and functionality. To develop a compact, mobile trigger generator, the team decided to use an isolation transformer to provide the necessary galvanic isolation.. The network will then connect to a switching circuit, incorporating components such as an IGBT and a fiber optic receiver, which will control how the pulse is discharged to the load, in this case, a three-electrode spark gap.
