| Title: | Comparing Mixed Reality and Paper-Based Instructions for Manual Assembly: Effects on Performance and Cognitive Workload |
| Abstract: | This study evaluates and compares the effectiveness of mixed reality (MR)-based and traditional paper-based instructions for manual assembly tasks. Traditional paper-based instructions require workers to interpret 2D diagrams and mentally translate them into 3D actions, which can increase cognitive load. In contrast, MR devices, such as the Meta Quest 3, provide interactive, step-by-step 3D guidance, potentially enhancing better comprehension of the instruction and reducing cognitive workload. To examine these differences, 10 participants (ages 21-37 years) were recruited to perform an assembly task. Participants were divided into two groups: one group was given MR-based instructions to complete the assembly via a Meta Quest 3 headset. The other group was provided with paper-based instructions. Task performance was evaluated based on completion time and error rates, while cognitive workload was assessed using the NASA-TLX. Results showed that MR-based instructions yielded quicker task completion time and lower errors. However, these differences were not statistically significant. Both groups reported moderate cognitive load, and while MR users found the instructions intuitive, some experienced issues related to resolution and comfort. These findings suggest that while MR does not yet outperform traditional methods in efficiency, continued technological advancements could enhance its utility for industrial training. |
