Title: Development of novel gaseous injectors for rotating detonation engines - design of a modular test section
Abstract: Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs) are a new type of engine which potentially offer superior performance over the existing aircraft engines. Despite widespread research, understanding of individual component level gasdynamics and performance is scarce. This project focuses on redesigning and manufacturing the test section in an existing shock tube used to study injectors used in RDEs. The shock tube, which has a 1-inch square cross section throughout its length, consists of a driver section and a driven section. The current test section is attached to the driven section exit and contains integrally machined injectors which were used to study a specific design. The test section also houses ports for optical windows enabling flow visualization in the injectors. However, current requirements necessitate that different injectors be tested to understand the unsteady gasdynamics in RDE injectors. In an effort to avoid the cost associated with machining entire test sections, the test section has been redesigned to test different injector configurations. The injector inserts themselves contain different geometries and can house static pressure transducers. Additionally, the modular design is easy to disassemble, so that various injector inserts may be swapped and tested at an acceptable pace.
