| Title: | TacitCaptions – Externalizing Tacit Skills Within Neon Glass Bending Practices Through Sensor-Video Synchronized Cues |
| Abstract: | Mastering neon glass bending, particularly the blowing technique, poses a significant challenge for beginners due to its tacit nature – subtle, embodied skills that are difficult to observe and internalize during demonstrations. In this work, we developed an instrumented glass-blowing tool capable of tracking blow strengths and patterns, capturing both video and sensor data from three expert neon benders performing two core bending actions. This sensor data is then transformed into tacit captions – sensory feedback such as light, vibration, and sound – synchronized with video or live sensor data to externalize these nuanced techniques. We conducted a study with five novices to examine the effectiveness of different types of tacit captions in communicating this information. Results show that tacit captions significantly enhance beginners' confidence, self-efficacy, and mind-muscle coordination, making the tacit elements of glass-blowing more accessible. This approach offers a novel method for teaching complex, embodied skills, bridging the gap between observation and practice in tacit learning. |
