Title: Net Zero Home Race (NZHR): The gamification of building retrofit toward the sustainable built environment
Abstract: From Texas winter storms to California wildfires, climate change has been the root cause of more extreme weather conditions in recent years that continue to affect the built environment significantly. By reducing energy consumption in buildings, we can work towards a more sustainable built environment to mitigate the impact of climate change. Retrofitting existing homes with energy efficient solutions is a strategy adoptable by many, yet awareness on available retrofits remains low. Thus, we developed the Net Zero Home Race (NZHR) game to bridge this gap by engaging and educating students in sustainable building retrofit. Using various coding frameworks such as React and Next.js, the game will simulate Monopoly-like game play experiences which allow players to choose if they are to purchase a series of retrofit solutions for the given typical house model in Texas. Upon completion, players will be ranked based on lowest energy consumption to identify the best retrofit decision-making process. With this game play, NZHR aims to inspire players to bring their learnings outside of the game and adopt sustainable practices in their own homes toward the sustainable built environment.
