| Title: | Exploring Human Factors: Is a Teleoperated Robotics Framework Feasible for Persons who are Visually Impaired? |
| Abstract: | This research explores the feasibility of teleoperated robotics as an assistive tool for visually impaired (VI) individuals. The goal is to understand the human factors influencing VI users' ability to operate remote robotic systems, which could enhance their independence, navigation in complex and changing environments, and employment opportunities. Current teleoperation interfaces rely heavily on visual feedback, which creates an accessibility gap for VI individuals. Our study seeks to diagnose the practicality of alternate multimodal feedback methods to improve the usability and user experience of telerobotic systems for VI users. To determine the feasibility of multimodal feedback in teleoperated robots, surveys, interviews, and pilot studies on groups of VI participants will be conducted. The pilot studies involve Unity engine simulations of a dynamic warehouse environment, and participants will test different teleoperation interfaces that provide auditory and haptic feedback using the Sony DualSense controller. Participant performance on simulation tasks will provide quantitative data, and their survey answers on the usability, confidence, and frustration with the system will provide qualitative data. The data will go through statistical analyses and machine learning algorithms to determine preliminary insights that will contribute to the development of inclusive, non-visual teleoperation interfaces in a future, full-scale project. |
