| Title: | Investigating the Fatigue Performance of Additively Manufactured Ti6Al4V with Innovative Border Designs |
| Abstract: | The titanium alloy Ti6Al4V (Ti64) is essential in the aerospace and medical industries due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. While Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is a promising method for creating complex Ti64 parts, the process can result in microstructures that limit ductility. Previous research from our group introduced a novel fabrication strategy using a "border" design to control heat transfer during the LPBF process. This technique successfully induced in situ martensitic decomposition, leading to a more homogenized microstructure and simultaneous improvements in both tensile strength and ductility. However, the effect of this unique microstructure on the material's fatigue life—a critical performance metric for most aerospace and biomedical applications—has not been investigated. This project aims to bridge that knowledge gap. We will fabricate Ti64 samples using the previously optimized border design and conduct comprehensive fatigue testing. The goal is to determine if the microstructural benefits translate to enhanced resistance to cyclic loading. Undergraduate students will be integral to all phases, gaining hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing, materials characterization, and mechanical testing. |
