Title: Design, Integration, and Validation of a Low Power Telemetry & Driver Information System for a Collegiate Solar Vehicle Power Telemetry & Driver Information System for a Collegiate Solar Vehicle
Abstract: This project developed a modular Arduino based Telemetry and Data Acquisition (T&DAQ) system to enhance energy management and situational awareness for the 2026 ASC and FSGP solar vehicle competitions, while establishing a simple template that can be modified for future teams. The team implemented a low latency Driver Information System to display real time safety metrics and developed a low power telemetry link for pit side monitoring. Technical integration connected vehicle subsystems, including the Battery Management System and MPPTs, over a Control Area Network (CAN), while processing modules aggregated and logged data. The team delivered hardware prototypes, embedded firmware, and a finalized dash instrument cluster using a sunlight readable display for the driver interface. Additionally, they defined data models, produced Interface Control Documents, and developed a pit side dashboard for forecasting power budgets and State of Charge. Validation efforts verified performance against quantitative targets, including under 200 ms latency and under 3 W power consumption. The project culminated in a race operations playbook establishing standard operating procedures and decision-making guides.
