Title: Mav Motors Lean Lab
Abstract: This project proposes the development of a Lean Innovation and Continuous Improvement Lab at the University of Texas at Arlington, modeled in collaboration with other nationally recognized universities. UT Arlington is planning to bring this mobile lab to other universities and companies across the DFW metroplex for instructional purposes. The purpose of this initiative is to create a hands-on learning environment where students, faculty, and industry partners collaborate to solve real-world operational challenges using Lean principles and systems thinking, through the guise of a LEGO aircraft manufacturing line inspired by the growing aerospace sector of the North Texas region. The lab will simulate real production and service environments, allowing students to apply process improvement tools such as value stream mapping, waste analysis, workflow optimization, and data-driven decision-making. Our results will show enhanced functionality, increased reliability, and strong potential for scalability. The project emphasizes innovation through creative problem-solving, interdisciplinary collaboration, and application of engineering and analytical principles. This initiative will position UTA as a leader in applied innovation education while building stronger partnerships with regional industries. The proposed lab represents a scalable, high-impact investment in experiential learning, research, and community engagement.
