Title: Image Processing and Time of Flight Analysis of Propagating Shocks
Abstract: High-speed schlieren videos were obtained of shocks propagating in a shock tube with a 1-inch square cross section throughout the driver, driven and the test section. The test section has opposing 3-inch diameter optical windows for schlieren visualization. The shock tube setup has 8 high-frequency response pressure transducers, with one located in the driver section, five in the driven section, and two in the test section. The schlieren system utilizes a high intensity white LED light source that enables the high-speed camera to record clearly with a frame rate of 200,000 frames per second and a shutter speed of 1.5 us. A weak propagating shock wave was formed and captured in 128 images by a high-speed schlieren system. From the high-speed video, an algorithm was developed to capture and process the images using the Canny edge detection method. From this process, an optical time-of-flight velocity and x-t diagram were produced. This process allows for an error estimate to be made on the shock propagation velocity, providing an advantage compared to the post-processing methods of raw video analysis. This method refines optical time-of-flight analysis techniques and can be applied to large shock tube/tunnel facilities.
