Title: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions for Water Quality Improvement: A Quantitative Analysis Using SWAT
Abstract: Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) have great potential to treat a wide range of wastewater as well as provide multiple socio-economic benefits to the community. This study utilizes historical monitoring data to understand the performances of different types of NBS, like constructed wetland, permeable pavement, green roofs, etc., in the removal of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), total suspended solids (TSS), heavy metals, and pathogens. A systematic literature review is conducted to identify the pollutant removal efficiency by NBS. Then, the effectiveness of each nature-based solution category in reducing pollutant concentrations is determined using a paired sample T test. Next, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is used to simulate the performance of different NBS in the Benbrook Lake watershed as a case study. The model is calibrated using the observed discharge data (Calibration NSE = 0.75), and subsequently, it is also calibrated with the available water quality data in the study area. Finally, various types of NBS are integrated into the model to simulate their overall performance in pollutant removal.
