| Title: | Emergency Field Intubation Feedback System |
| Abstract: | In response to emergency situations, EMS and firefighter personnel may be required to perform endotracheal intubations in the field to administer life-saving oxygen to a patient. Field intubations typically present more complications and variables than closed hospital settings. Proper and accurate technique is crucial to the success of an intubation, including the use of a laryngoscope and the insertion of the endotracheal tube (ETT). We propose to design two accessories to supplement the intubation system to address this clinical need (1) an attachment to the laryngoscope handle that will handle the measuring and feedback of the laryngoscope positioning and (2) a miniature capnography for the ETT tube to confirm tracheal insertion. The position of the laryngoscope blade will be determined by a 9-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor with an LED display status. The miniature capnography will rely on the physiological difference of CO₂ composition in the trachea and esophagus, measured with a CO₂ sensor and equipped with a visual alert for feedback. This project addresses the need for a system that provides real-time, actionable feedback to firefighters during intubation to improve placement accuracy. |
