| Title: | Padded Spine Board |
| Abstract: | This project develops a radiolucent, removable cushioning attachment for a standard EMS spine board. The goal is to reduce patient discomfort and localized pressure during immobilization. Current rigid boards can create high pressure points at the shoulders, sacrum, and heels. It increases pain and the risk of skin injury, especially during prolonged transport. The solution uses a lightweight, disinfectable cushioning layer which is comfortable and sturdy. It improves pressure distribution. To quantify impact, we evaluate interface pressure with and without the cushioning using removable force-sensing resistors (FSRs) placed between the patient and board at relevant locations. Sensors are read through a voltage divider circuit and microcontroller-based data acquisition system that outputs real-time pressure trends and peak values for comparison. A controlled test protocol is used with consistent subject positioning, and repeated trials. Outcomes include percent reduction in peak pressure, changes in average pressure over time, and qualitative comfort ratings. The design emphasizes ease of deployment, cleanability, radiolucency, durability, and compatibility with common spine boards. This work provides an evidence based, low-cost attachment that improves patient comfort while preserving EMS workflow and immobilization. |
