| Abstract: | The PhD Student Manager is a web-based platform created to help research labs better manage the academic and administrative work involved in supervising PhD students. Many labs currently rely on a mix of spreadsheets, shared folders, and email to track progress, organize tasks, manage shared resources, and handle reimbursements. Over time, this approach can make it difficult for students to stay organized and for supervisors to maintain a clear, up-to-date view of lab activity, deadlines, and student progress. This project was developed for the Robotic Visual Lab (UTA) as the primary use case. Based on RVL workflows, the system brings these processes into a single, role-based platform where students and faculty can track academic milestones, submit weekly reports and research papers, manage tasks through a Kanban-style board, reserve lab equipment and servers, and submit travel reimbursement requests with secure receipt uploads. Supervisors can review submissions, monitor progress, and oversee lab resources more efficiently. The application is built using a modern three-tier architecture, with a React/Next.js frontend and a Supabase-backed data layer that supports authentication, secure storage, and access control. While tailored to the RVL, the platform is flexible enough to be adapted for other research labs with similar needs. |
