Title: RheoCognition: A Graph Approach for Slip Casting and Edifying its Literacy
Abstract: Slip casting allows for the production of intricate ceramics, yet its success relies on complex material behaviors that are difficult for people unfamiliar in slip to master. While sensors can track these material properties, the resulting data is often unintuitive for makers. This research investigates how Large Language Models (LLMs) can bridge the gap between raw sensor outputs and conceptual material understanding. We evaluated LLMs' ability to interpret sensor curves by varying visual graph parameters and mapping data points to specific slip behaviors. The models then translated these technical insights into plain language and analogies. We aim to show that this "translational process" can help newcomers understand graphs in domains they're not familiar with. To evaluate this, we present the design of an interactive scaffolding system and outline our preliminary pilot study aimed at gauging users' immediate comprehension of slip casting data.
