Title: Monopulse Antenna
Abstract: Our project is a 5.8 GHz monopulse radar system designed to measure the azimuth and elevation angle of a target with a goal accuracy of 3 degrees. Unlike traditional scanning radars, monopulse radar determines direction using a single transmitted pulse by comparing sum (Σ) and difference (Δ) signals generated from multiple antenna elements. This improves tracking accuracy and reduces sensitivity to signal strength fluctuations. The system uses a 2×2 microstrip patch antenna array fabricated on FR-4 substrate, operating in the ISM band. The antenna outputs feed into a rat-race comparator network, which produces the sum and difference channels required for angle estimation. An AD9361 RF front end handles transmission and reception, while an FPGA processes the digitized signals in real time to compute the target’s direction. The project integrates RF design, electromagnetic simulation, PCB fabrication, and digital signal processing.
