Project Type: REU
Title: Creation of product designs and manufacturing procedures for combining 3D-printing and RFID technologies
Abstract: The SmartTag Initiative of the IMSE Department will introduce a standardized manufacturing workflow for producing customizable name badges and RFID enabled key fobs within the department. This process will allow faculty and staff to design, print, and implement low-cost, scalable identification badges on demand for events and opportunities. The keyfobs will enable the faculty and student researchers to link their research articles and portfolios to distribute their work with fellow peers at professional conferences and academic events, which can be reprogrammed to update with new work or research at any time. Furthermore, the resulting research will create a structured training protocol, which will be designed to onboard new student researchers and faculty to the procedures of the initiative. By combining process standardization, additive manufacturing, and RFID technology, the process being developed will demonstrate a practical application of industrial engineering manufacturing principles, building upon the efforts of the IMSE department to improve departmental efficiency and professional networking.
