| Title: | Advancing First Responder Preparedness through Digital Twin and XR-Based Indoor Drone Training. |
| Abstract: | Drones are increasingly integral to emergency and disaster management, supporting inspection, rescue, and situational awareness in high-risk environments. First responders, however, require realistic and repeatable training to operate drones effectively during fires, floods, structural collapses, and man-made emergencies. Traditional real-life exercises, such as controlled burns or staged floods, are costly, hazardous, and require specialized facilities, challenges that are even greater for indoor operation training. Integrate the model into a physics-based XR environment, simulate realistic emergency scenarios in building-specific layouts, enabling trainees to practice drone flying for hazard recognition, route selection, and decision-making without the risks of live training. By reducing cost, increasing accessibility, and allowing greater scenario variety, this approach will complement traditional instruction and improve readiness. Beyond direct benefits to first responders, the digital twin models can also support fire departments, campus safety officials, and facilities managers for preparedness planning, evacuation drills, and post-incident analysis. This project contributes to advancing XR-based training methodologies while providing undergraduate student researchers with hands-on experience in reality capture, immersive simulation design, and emergency response research. |
