| Title: | Improving Human Performance in Remote Robot Control |
| Abstract: | Remote robots are widely used in inspection, logistics, and hazardous environments. In these settings, operators depend entirely on camera feedback to guide movement and make decisions. However, it is still unclear how different visual displays affect operator performance, workload, and awareness. Poor interface design can slow performance and increase risk. This study compares three visual conditions during robot exploration and mapping: a standard monitor with monoscopic video, an immersive VR headset with stereoscopic vision, and a co-located condition in which the operator walks alongside the robot. The robot platform, route, and speed limits were kept constant so that only the visual interface changed. We measured task completion time, target identification accuracy, workload, situation awareness, and visual scanning behavior. Results show that display type directly affects navigation speed, search strategy, and perceived effort. Monoscopic viewing led to slower movement and more frequent adjustments. Stereoscopic viewing supported faster exploration but increased reported effort for some users. The co-located condition showed the most stable workload ratings. These findings provide evidence-based guidance for selecting teleoperation displays, helping improve safety, efficiency, and reliability in remote robotic operations. |
