| Title: | Force Feedback Osteotome for Surgical Training |
| Abstract: | The process of bone shaping with an osteotome remains a highly manual and skill-based process, with no quantitative feedback available regarding the amount of force applied and the direction of the strike. The current state-of-the-art equipment provides no objective information, relying solely on the expertise of the surgeon. This project introduces a novel force feedback osteotome that integrates high-resolution impact force measurement with real-time inertial tracking to provide a quantitative measure of both the intensity of the strike and the orientation of the osteotome. The novel system integrates a compact load sensing module and a 9-DOF inertial measurement unit in a standard osteotome form factor, enabling simultaneous measurement of force and angular precision during bone shaping procedures. The sensor data is processed in real-time and displayed through a custom-designed graphical interface, which enables easy monitoring of the deviation from a target reference strike angle. This two-in-one approach converts a standard passive surgical instrument into an active data-producing training instrument. The repeatability, angular precision, and system accuracy are validated through experiments on artificial vertebra models. The proposed system is a novel addition to the area of objective surgical skill assessment, training standardization, and overall procedural reproducibility in orthopedic and spinal surgery. |
