Title: Towards Developing a 3D In-memory Computiny Simulator
Abstract: Modern computing, constrained by the von Neumann architecture, faces significant bottlenecks in data movement between memory and processors. This leads to energy inefficiency and reduced performance, especially in data-intensive AI applications. In-Memory Computing (IMC) offers a transformative solution by performing computations directly within memory. While current simulators primarily model 2D memory arrays, the next leap in performance lies in 3D IMC architectures, which stack multiple memory layers to increase density and efficiency. This project aims to address the critical need for advanced simulation tools by extending an existing, open-source 2D simulator, CrossSim, to accurately model 3D IMC systems. This project will be instrumental in developing and validating new modules for CrossSim to simulate the complex behaviors of signals, errors, and delays in a 3D environment. The outcome will be an enhanced, publicly available software package that enables more rapid design and analysis of next- generation AI hardware, contributing a valuable tool to the broader research community.
