In the Zone

When someone is “in the zone,” they’re in a cognitive state of mind known as flow. A person enters this state when highly engaged with a task, where they often lose track of time and enjoy a high level of success. Cesar Torres, assistant professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department, is using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to identify when a person falls out of flow and introduce an intervention to regain the state. “When people are in flow, they generally experience two benefits: improved performance and lessened perception of failure,” Dr. Torres says. “This research is about building a maker's resiliency and shifting perceptions of failure by leveraging the body’s innate ability to get happily lost in making.”
