Autonomous Systems Lab
Before a new autonomous system is set loose in the world, it must be thoroughly tested. That's where the Autonomous Systems Lab at the UTA Research Institute (UTARI) steps in. Small companies that develop technologies to control autonomous vehicles or to counter unmanned aircraft system (UAS) applications often do not have the ability to test their technology. The Autonomous Systems Lab has the expertise and equipment to design, test, . . .
Cultivating a Lab Culture
Professor Ashfaq Adnan has cultivated a pipeline of student researchers by creating a lab environment where everyone has room to thrive.
Building a robust research laboratory at a university is challenging. A successful lab director must raise money to purchase necessary equipment, write grant proposals to generate consistent funding, and—most importantly — recruit talented personnel to assist with the research and contribute their own ideas.
REEngineered: Helping Arlington Traffic Flow Smoothly
The city of Arlington has hundreds of traffic cameras at intersections throughout the community, many of which are underused. To help make these traffic tools more efficient, Taylor Li, an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, has been given a high-speed fiber connection and access to more than 300 traffic cameras and 100 traffic light systems . . .

UTA Heads West
Our president, Jennifer Cowley, has just completed her first year at UT Arlington. As she travels around North Texas, she speaks of the "Maverick Factor" as the thing that sets UTA apart. What's the Maverick Factor? It's being unafraid to do whatever it takes in pursuit of our goals, unrelenting in forging a pathway, unwavering in our commitment to excellence, unafraid to discover new technologies that impact the state, nation, world—in other words, any number of things that capture our undeniably unstoppable spirit. . . . Campus Update
Electrical engineering students have an upgraded space to meet, collaborate, and study, thanks to a $75,000 gift from Oncor Electric Delivery.
The Oncor IEEE Student Lounge features 726 square feet of renovated community space in Nedderman Hall. It is a gathering spot where the department's nearly 600 students can study, practice skills, collaborate on projects, and socialize between classes.
Oncor's gift funded improvements, including new furniture and equipment, as well as student success programming and student travel. “Oncor has long been one of UTA's most valued corporate partners, and we are deeply grateful for this latest philanthropic investment,” UTA President Jennifer Cowley says. “The lounge provides a collaborative and functional space that fuels success and career readiness for our electrical engineering students.” ₪
In Memoriam
Marvin Applewhite ('64 BS, Electrical Engineering), a former member of the President's Advisory Board and the College of Engineering Board of Advisors, passed away on April 1, 2024, in Dallas, surrounded by family, including his wife of almost 58 years, Shirley. Applewhite was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1991. He was a generous donor to the University, making several philanthropic investments at UTA, including the Marvin and Shirley Applewhite Scholarship Endowment.
