Increasing IoT Students
The number of students interested in Internet-of-Things (IoT) study and research could soon see a boost. Computer science and engineering Professor Ishfaq Ahmad received a $1.5 million Graduate Assistance for Areas of National Need grant from the Department of Education to support IoT doctoral students of superior ability who demonstrate financial need. The project will stress diversity, equity, and inclusion in its recruitment, major points of emphasis for the University and the College of Engineering.
"IoT is computing on the edge," Dr. Ahmad says. "It can include computing that's in the palm of your hand as well as sensors in buildings, highways, and the environment. It's about collecting huge amounts of data and using that data to improve lives."
He notes that the grant is significant because it helps the University provide opportunities for promising doctoral students, especially women and those from other underrepresented groups.
"Recruiting those students is essential to UTA solidifying its standing as a top-tier university. We believe this grant can help us in that recruitment effort.
