College Honored by ASEE
The College of Engineering earned a Bronze Award—the highest level of recognition—from the American Society for Engineering Education’s Diversity Recognition Program.
The college has seen dramatic increases in enrollment in the past five years, which necessitated the hiring of 50 new faculty members. These increases have led to greater ethnic and gender diversity and the addition of programs to support diversity among students and faculty.
“As our enrollment continues to become more diverse, we have been able to strategically hire many new faculty members to ensure that the people who are in front of classrooms and leading research labs are equally diverse,” says Peter Crouch, dean of the College of Engineering. “This gives our students an edge as they enter a global workforce.”
In fall 2019, students from 70 countries and across the United States were enrolled in the college. Hispanic students represented 28% of the undergraduate population, while women made up 21% of all engineering students, a percentage slightly higher than the national average. Women also account for 27% of tenured/tenure-track faculty, compared to a national average of 17.4%.
