DFW Airport Partnership

Civil engineering Assistant Professor Nick Fang is partnering with Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as it takes proactive steps to manage storm water and flooding on site. The five-year, $1.5 million project will:

  • help improve storm water management strategies and runway operations,
  • perform systematic evaluations of green storm water infrastructure on airport property, and
  • develop an advanced flood warning system that mitigates potential issues before they happen.

Andy Kruzic and Xinbao Yu, both associate professors of civil engineering, are co-investigators on the project.

“DFW Airport doesn’t have issues with severe flooding at the moment, but adding more impervious areas and reducing permeable areas could potentially cause increased flooding as the airport continues to grow,” Dr. Fang explains.

Eduardo N. Tovar, P.E., the manager of systems performance at DFW Airport, says UTA is “a valued resource for this important initiative. Working with a partner that shares our commitment to strong, progressive, and knowledgeable management of storm water is important.”
